Past Projects

The best illustration of Management Cornerstones' capabilities is through projects that the firm has completed for its clients. A small sample of consulting contracts highlights the breadth and depth of experience.

   Philanthropy

  • For the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we studied the feasibility of addressing six issue areas involving nonprofit management. In a subsequent assignment, we completed a business plan for three of the issue areas, which subsequently became initiatives of the Nonprofit Management Fund: Diagnostic Clinics, Board Development, and Social Entrepreneurship.

  • For the Chicago Community Trust, a principal provided interim staff support for its education grant-making program. We also evaluated the Trust's grant-making program for small and mid-sized arts organizations.

  • For the Siebert Lutheran Foundation in Milwaukee, we facilitated a strategic planning process, identifying funding priorities to fulfill its mission.

  • For the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, two of the six principals served as “virtual program officers” over a six-year period, reviewing proposals and making grant recommendations.

   Social Services

  • For the Lakefront SRO Corporation, Chicago, we helped build a Board; developed a three-year fundraising plan, including a system to attract in-kind resources; assisted in creating a human resources department; and, consulted on organizational development issues.

  • For Jobs for Youth/Chicago, we conducted an audit of marketing and employer services; facilitated several long-range planning processes; and, instituted a program planning and evaluation effort as part of a major program expansion.

   Arts & Culture

  • For the Illinois Arts Council, we designed a statewide technical assistance system to address the needs of arts organizations; wrote a booklet on Board orientation for widespread distribution; presented a training series for the staff; conducted a series of training sessions on Board development and fundraising for arts groups throughout the state.

  • For the Latin American Museum of Arts in Chicago, we conducted an arts and cultural needs assessment of the Hispanic community.

  • For the Hannibal, Missouri Arts Council, we designed and facilitated a planning process to establish a community cultural center in a historic site.

  • For Pegasus Players in Chicago, we analyzed production and financial capacity; assisted in assessing the impact of a change in theater location; assisted in developing an integrated budgeting process; and, produced several three-year strategic plans.

    Community & Economic Development

  • For the Corporation for Cultural Re-Investment, we conducted a feasibility study on the program and market potential of establishing a business incubator for nonprofit arts organizations; designed, and subsequently co-founded the incubator, which operated for 20 years.

  • For the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation in Milwaukee, we trained the Board; assisted in evaluating programs; and, facilitated development of strategic plans.

  • For Spanish Coalition for Jobs in Chicago, we conducted a feasibility study on the expansion of workforce development programs; facilitated annual and strategic planning processes: revised the personnel management system; strengthened the governing Board; helped establish a business advisory Board; coordinated an accreditation process for their educational programs; and, produced a comprehensive income diversification plan.
