capabilities is through projects that the firm has completed for its clients. A

Philanthropy
For
the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we studied the feasibility of
addressing six issue areas involving nonprofit management. In a subsequent
assignment, we completed a business plan for three of the issue areas, which
subsequently became initiatives of the Nonprofit Management Fund: Diagnostic
Clinics, Board Development, and Social Entrepreneurship.
For
the Chicago Community Trust, a principal provided interim staff support
for its education grant-making program. We also evaluated the Trust's
grant-making program for small and mid-sized arts organizations.
For
the Siebert Lutheran Foundation in Milwaukee, we facilitated a strategic
planning process, identifying funding priorities to fulfill its mission.
For
the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, two of the six principals
served as “virtual program officers” over a six-year period, reviewing
proposals and making grant recommendations.
Social
Services
For
the Lakefront SRO Corporation, Chicago, we helped build a Board;
developed a three-year fundraising plan, including a system to attract in-kind
resources; assisted in creating a human resources department; and, consulted on
organizational development issues.
For
Jobs for Youth/Chicago, we conducted an audit of marketing and employer
services; facilitated several long-range planning processes; and, instituted a
program planning and evaluation effort as part of a major program expansion.
Arts
& Culture
For
the Illinois Arts Council, we designed a statewide technical assistance
system to address the needs of arts organizations; wrote a booklet on Board
orientation for widespread distribution; presented a training series for the
staff; conducted a series of training sessions on Board development and
fundraising for arts groups throughout the state.
For
the Latin American Museum of Arts in Chicago, we conducted an arts and
cultural needs assessment of the Hispanic community.
For
the Hannibal, Missouri Arts Council, we designed and facilitated a
planning process to establish a community cultural center in a historic site.
For
Pegasus Players in Chicago, we analyzed production and financial
capacity; assisted in assessing the impact of a change in theater location;
assisted in developing an integrated budgeting process; and, produced several
three-year strategic plans.
Community & Economic
Development
For
the Corporation for Cultural Re-Investment, we conducted a feasibility
study on the program and market potential of establishing a business incubator
for nonprofit arts organizations; designed, and subsequently co-founded the
incubator, which operated for 20 years.
For
the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation in Milwaukee, we
trained the Board; assisted in evaluating programs; and, facilitated
development of strategic plans.
For
Spanish Coalition for Jobs in Chicago, we conducted a feasibility study
on the expansion of workforce development programs; facilitated annual and
strategic planning processes: revised the personnel management system;
strengthened the governing Board; helped establish a business advisory Board;
coordinated an accreditation process for their educational programs; and,
produced a comprehensive income diversification plan.
Health
Services
For
the Society for Adolescent Medicine in Kansas City, we facilitated
several Board retreats on organizational development; produced an annual plan;
and, trained the Board in fundraising.
For
the Milwaukee Health Services, we conducted a management audit and an
analysis of their medical protocols; working with the local Board, we assisted
them in defending their case for continued federal funding.
Education
For
the National Association for the Advancement and Education of Cambodian,
Laotian, and Vietnamese Americans, we facilitated a comprehensive
long-range planning process.
